UNDER THE PROPOSED LEGISLATION, STATES WOULD NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR MEDICAID FUNDING IF THEY BAN IVF SERVICES. SOME 4.35 THE RESULTS FROM THE ALABAMA COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT ARE IN AT THE ALABAMA STATE DEPARTMENT RELEASING THIS YEAR’S RESULTS. IT SHOWS 91% OF THIRD GRADERS IN THE STATE ARE READING AT OR ABOVE GRADE LEVEL. WVTM 13 PATSY DOUGLAS IS LIVE IN LOCAL FOR US WITH MORE ON THIS EXCITING NEWS. SO PATSY, WHAT’S THE REACTION TO THESE RESULTS? WELL, IT’S BEEN GREAT. SPECIFICALLY FOR BCS BIRMINGHAM CITY SCHOOLS. THEY’VE MADE A HUGE JUMP FROM LAST YEAR, 81% OF THEIR STUDENTS PASSING THE A CAP. SO GOOD NEWS FOR THEM. AND THIS HAS LEADERS LIKE COMMISSIONER SHEILA TYSON REALLY EXCITED FOR WHAT’S TO COME IN THE FUTURE. I KNEW IF YOU FIND ARLEY INVEST IN OUR CHILDREN, IT CAN HAPPEN. I ALREADY KNEW THIS. I WAS JUST WAITING ON EVERYONE ELSE TO CATCH ON. THE ALABAMA STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION RELEASING SCORES THROUGH ALL DISTRICTS BCS SHOWING UP BIG FOR THE 2023 2024 ACADEMIC TERM. LAST YEAR, ALMOST HALF OF BCS STUDENTS HAD A FAILING A CAP SCORE. THE RESULTS LEFT SCHOOL MEMBERS AND ALSO PARENTS LOOKING FOR MORE WAYS TO ADVANCE READING LEVELS. LAST YEAR, THIRD GRADERS WERE AT 54% THIS YEAR, MAKING THE JUMP TO 81%. COMMISSIONER SHEILA SHEILA TYSON SAYS THE RESULTS THIS SCHOOL YEAR JUST SHOWS HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO INVEST IN THESE STUDENTS. YOU HAD PEOPLE COMING OUT IN VOLUNTEERING TO INVEST. YOU HAD PARENTS THAT WAS TAKING OFF WORK EXTRA EARLY. SOME OF THEM QUIT THEIR SECOND JOBS TO INVEST INTO THEIR CHILDREN. SO IT WAS A BIG SACRIFICE FOR THE COMMUNITY, WHICH WAS NEEDED. DEFINITELY. NOW LETTERS WILL BE SENT OUT TO THOSE FAMILIES WHO DID NOT HAVE CHILDREN THAT PASSED THE A CAP. THIS YEAR, BCS SAYS STUDENTS CAN TAKE THE TEST AGAIN IF THEY FELT THE A CAP. AND OF COURSE THEY PLAN TO HAVE A LEARNING PROGRAM THIS SUMMER TO HELP ENSURE THAT ALL SCHOLARS WILL SUCCEED IN THE YEAR.

Birmingham City Schools showed significant improvement for the 2023-2024 academic term.
